Vision

The vision of Africa’s Light is to be a LIGHT by giving vulnerable children love, hope, education, food, a place to live, and medical care. The vision is to give vulnerable children their basic needs, allowing their LIGHT to shine. Additionally, through discipleship, they learn to demonstrate the Kingdom of God.

Mission

Africa’s Light’s mission is to provide for children who have lost one or both parents. These children are especially vulnerable to child labor, trafficking, and sickness. Africa’s Light provides love, school fees, food, a place to live, medical care, and equips them to demonstrate the Kingdom of God. These resources allow a child to live with extended family and guardians who want them but can’t afford them . Africa’s Light’s mission is to support extended families who care for orphaned children, through small business loans.

The Challenge

  • Currently, there are about 153 million orphans in the world.
  • In Africa, about 12 percent of all children are orphans.
  • 56% of children in Uganda do not have basic needs met.
  • Most orphans are cared for by their extended family members.

Our Story

Africa’s Light is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing hope and transforming the lives of vulnerable children in Africa. Our journey began with a simple yet powerful vision – to be a beacon of light in the lives of those who need it most. We believe that every child deserves love, care, education, and a chance to succeed, regardless of their circumstances.

At Africa’s Light, we focus on addressing the needs of orphaned children and those who are identified as the most vulnerable in their communities. Our approach is rooted in sustainability, as we understand the importance of creating lasting change that extends far beyond immediate interventions. By working closely with extended family members, we ensure that children can remain in nurturing homes, surrounded by the love and support of their own communities.

Why should I give?

As a child sponsor, you’ll be meeting the most pressing needs of a child who is vulnerable to trafficking, and who has been orphaned.
You’ll be able to teach the children in your life the importance of sharing with those in desperate need through your example.
You may give birth to a whole new generation of child sponsors!
With Africa’s Light, you have the assurance of knowing that you are sponsoring through a ministry with transparency, and the highest standards of any child sponsorship organization.

How Do We Choose the Children?

It is important to find vulnerable children who are motivated towards excellence in their schoolwork.
The schools are able to identify the children that are vulnerable. The schools know who cannot pay their school fees on their own.
Another way to identify vulnerable children is to visit the Christian Union in the school. In every school, there is a Christian Union. The Christian students come together and pray every week. They collect money. They give it to pay school fees for some students.
A third way to identify vulnerable children is to visit committee leaders. There is a local chairman of every village. The local chairman knows who is vulnerable. The probation officer oversees all children who are under the age of 18. Lastly, the local churches have a record of who is vulnerable and who might need help.

Why Do Africa’s Light Children Stay with Existing Family or a Guardian?

The best scenario for children is not that they would move to orphanages, or be adopted to another country, but that they would have the opportunity to stay with their extended families, who would like to keep them if they had support.

How Do I Interact with the Children?

Read updates on your child’s progress in school and other activities.
Enjoy contributing to special funds for Christmas and birthdays.
Pray for the children and rest assured that he or she will learn about Jesus and have the chance to receive education, food, a place to live, medical care and college/vocational training. Plan a visit to meet your child.

Why Do We Give Small Business Loans to Extended Family Members and Guardians of the Children We Serve?

The vulnerable children often have extended family or a guardian who want to care for them but simply can’t afford it. The average business loan in Uganda is between $90-250, which allows a person to use their skills to start a business and provide for their family. This helps provide a long term solution to the orphan crisis.
